If you ever see my Spotify year wrapped, you know that I listen to a lot of music. 4.3 hours per day to be exact. If I hear a great song or album, I listen to it on repeat. This year, I’ve been listening to NOT BY CHANCE by Aaron Cole since it came out on August 31st. It highlights the theme that the challenges in our lives, the places we have been, and successes we have achieved didn’t happen by chance.
This idea and album inspired this week’s message.
You are who you are today because of 3 things:
- God’s plan and guidance over your life.
- What others have done for you.
- Your hard work and effort.
Where you are today didn’t happen by chance. There has been a chain of events that led you to exactly where you are today, whether you like it or not. What if you looked at your situation as if you are supposed to be there? What if you knew that God is working on something big while you are stressed, working insane hours, or upset? I know I need to keep that perspective.
On top of God’s plan, others have guided you to where you are today. Your parents have sacrificed to help you on your journey, mentors have given you advice and guidance in your life, and friends have shaped you into the person you are today. You have been affected by hundreds of people you have interacted with up until this point in your life. You also have the ability to help someone else behind you.
Your work ethic has placed you where you are today. When you work hard, things happen. When you work, you give God something to work with. You can’t expect God to do big things in your life when you are sitting on the couch. When you go after what you want, God is able to use that for His glory.
“Been a whole lot of crying and a whole lot of grindin’ / But I wouldn’t take it back / Not a chance yeah. And He called me to be holy so I set apart / Why be the same? I knew that way before I even had a part.” -Aaron Cole, NOT BY CHANCE
You are set apart. You have greatness inside of you. The person you are today didn’t happen by chance. Your situation didn’t happen by chance. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you are just another person in this big world.
When you work hard, get guidance from others, and that all aligns with God’s will, big things will happen.
As Aaron says, “If God can take a kid from Bristol, VA who came from nothing to having a record deal and going on arena tours, then He can do that for you too.”
I appreciate you.
