Why

“We don’t get burned out because of what we do. We get burned out because we forget why we do it.”

-Jon Gordon and Inky Johnson.

Why are you the person you are today? Why are you in your profession? Why do you act a certain way? Why?

Although I don’t entirely agree with the quote above, burnout is common in our lives. Investment bankers, physicians, nurses, and social workers all experience high rates of burnout and turnover. Working upwards of 40 and 50 hour works on a consistent basis takes its toll on your mental and physical health.

For all the athletes reading, especially runners, get your sleep. I’ve experienced burnout and so have many of my teammates. You must take care of your body if you want to perform well in any aspect of life. Even the people who never forget why they run or compete can experience burnout. Taking care of yourself is a natural habit of a bigger calling for your daily grind.

Take time every day or week to reflect on why you do what you do. Remember the goals you are reaching towards. When you picture the end of the road, it makes every mile marker easier along the way. Instead of driving aimlessly, you know where you are going and why you are going there.

The amazing happens when your why is bigger than your excuses. People notice when your why is bigger than your circumstance. When you remember why you wake up every morning, the alarm won’t be as loud, the criticism from your boss won’t sting as bad, and the commute to work won’t be as dreadful.

Your current job or lifestyle may not be something you want to do, and it may not be your ultimate dream or goal. If you are in school, you definitely don’t plan on learning in a classroom for the rest of your life. Remember why you are putting in the hours and staying up late to study. Look forward to the work ethic and knowledge you are gaining over your 4 years. Often, jobs and school are stepping stones to something bigger. They are preparing you to be the person you need to be someday. You have to experience every challenge to be ready for your dreams.

When your why is big, every setback seems small.

Why do you do what you do?

I appreciate you.
